TipsTrendsHow to Find Your Food Photography Style

I know people say to never assume anything but I’m going to go ahead and assume that you have either just gotten into food photography or you’d like to! Now that you’ve done the first step which is making the decision to start, you can start thinking about creating your brand. Of course you can just start taking photos and expressing yourself however you’d like but, finding your photography style can be helpful if you’re interested in photographing long-term. Photography style helps capture photos that tell stories and express who you are as an individual. Although you may want to jump right into it, finding your personal style takes time! A crucial step in this journey is becoming comfortable with photography techniques. With food photography, there is so much that goes into one photo. Learning the angles, lighting, and composition that you enjoy the most is important when finding your style. Also, finding what inspires you is key to this journey! Start looking around and researching a little (this doesn’t have to be boring… start looking around on Pinterest or Instagram!) When you find a photo that makes you feel moved and excited then you know you’re on the right path. Use that photo to challenge yourself with your own photos. Chase that feeling that the first photo gave you and continue to always find it! When looking at a photo try to ask yourself why you like it… Is it the angle? The lighting? The background? Whatever the answer may be, use that technique that intrigued you within your own photos. Instead of copying someone’s work, always strive to do better than them. Play around with those techniques that intrigued you and eventually your style will emerge!
